The international architecture film festival is taking on its third year. As in recent years, we’re engaging the audience with films on architecture, the city and built environment. What makes the festival so special among other architecture film festivals is the fact that our screenings take place in public space, generating a mix of audiences, from film buffs to architects to passers-by and neighbours, creating lively discussions between filmmakers, experts and a broader public

A big department store selling building-shaped wishes.
Here the perfect house is real, visible, tangible, accessible, simple to be imagined, and available for purchase. We are in Daegu Gwangyeoksi, the fourth largest town in South Korea with 2.5 million citizens. A smiling and polite hostess shows a scale miniature of the building and explains that it offers three different apartment types (70, 79, 96 square meters) and it can host 839 families. Moreover, when you enter the different rooms you can daydream so that you won’t have any doubt about the future architectural structure. Mainly visited by women, I-Wish is a place beyond reality where, however, you wear slippers as if you were already at your own home.

of course, this »learning« is not only happening from this person whom you might want to call teacher or professor: you learn from everyone, from everything.
of course, learning about space is predominantly happening by absorbing, feeling, analysing spaces; plus perhaps a little introduction hereunto. should you agree so far, then it sure will be self-evident, that a space-teaching purposed space could by no means be undermined with that polygreyish softcornered corporate office outfit visual pollution.

room 2207 was transformed from this corporate office into a flexible multipurpose space:
three elements, conjointly sharing 1750 mm as their length to keep things simple.

flat bars
steel bars as habitat for neodym-magnets, are adopting the level of the door-sill; carnauba-waxed surface.

an attempt to categorize our collection of south-korean architecture

after watching, observing, walking, driving, talking, spying, looking through and at south-korean cities, villages, landscapes [obeservational research], we felt some need to disclose our discoveries: starting from the three ubiquitous residential types han-ok, yang-ok and appat, we soon expanded our research to a wider range of anonymous vernacular, common architecture. we categorized the buildings according to their scale.
we are looking for transferrable principles which could give the specific potentials of the typologies a cultural, social, economical and ecological architectural perspective.
this collection does not intend to be complete, the collection is intended as a process.

»Raw space for art!« that is what we suggest to the city council of daegu and the daegu fine arts association, who invited us to an international symposium, about the transformation of the 60.000 qm tabacco-factory »kt&g« into a cultural area. The massive building, near daegu station and near the historical city center, which is a monumental witness of the korean industrial age and empty for several years, could be a corner-stone for the revitalisation of the whole area. > map

It could be a really symbiotic process, a »long-term interaction between different biological species« to start using the building as factory for creative & cultural industries >from industrial production to cultural production. The building will survive, the artists will have space for their experimental art production and the neighbours will have vital partner, which effect on the urban space and the quality of the city.

allowing tobacco studios as well as its neighbourhood to develop in a symbiotic process to strengthen not only its identity as a space for art-production, but also the identity of colourful daegu.

coming to daegu 4 months ago, i was totally lost in this city. i had the impression, i will never be able to orientate in this city. only the green hills seemed to me something like an orientation mark., maybe one of the most characterizing points, that korean cities don’t seem to have no monumets, no palaces, churches, industrial complexes, …, no landmarks for orientation. we stubled onto this building in september, and for me it was the first building in daegu with real identity. a building like a monument, a massive landmark on the edge of the historical city of impressingly big scale, witness of korean industrial age, of the enormous economic growing of this country. i can read in this building some part of koreas history, without knowing the language, without studying books.
