The world’s population is growing and concentrating in cities. This is a process that started with the industrial revolution two hundred years ago and is still on-going in an intense way. A 2011 UN report on human settlements estimates that 70% of the world’s population will be living in cities by 2050. In this context, cities need to develop an economic and environmentally sustainable growth in order to improve the quality of life for all. Cities will have a major role dealing with the fundamental challenges of the 21st century: climate change and other environmental threats; high consumption of non-renewable resources; economic development; growing populations; and ageing infrastructures.
In this context, the Smart City Expo World Congress is the meeting point for companies, public administration, entrepreneurs and research centres to show, learn, share, network and gather inspiration to support today’s development of future cities.
Energy
Cities are a major contributor to CO2 emissions in Europe and America. It is a pleasure for us to announce that our paper on our ±brick »SOLAR ENERGY-COLLECTING MASONRY-MODULES AS INTEGRATED LOW-TECH HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM« has been accepted at the Sustainable Building Conference sb13 munich.

Kein anderer Architekt des 20. Jahrhunderts war in Korea einflussreicher als Kim Swoo Geun. Während er aber in seiner Heimat bis heute eine Berühmtheit ist, stellt sich uns – auch 25 Jahre nach seinem Tod – noch immer die gleiche Frage, die bereits 1979 ein Time-Life-Redakteur formulierte: „Ob er wohl jemals auch internationale Bekanntheit erlangt?“ (…) Kim Swoo Geun wurde 1931 in Cheongjin, in der Provinz Hamgyong-Namdo im Norden Koreas, geboren. Zum Studium schrieb er sich an der National University von Seoul im Fachbereich Architektur ein, für einen von seinerzeit nur zwei Studiengängen mit vierjähriger Dauer. Sein Studium währte noch keine drei Monate, als der Koreakrieg ausbrach. Nicht in der Lage, aus Seoul zu fliehen, wurde Kim von nordkoreanischen Soldaten zum Militärdienst beordert. Mit knapper Not gelang es ihm, sich der Anordnung zu entziehen und er machte sich, gerade 20 Jahre alt, als blinder Passagier auf den Weg nach Japan, um dort seine Studien fortzusetzen. Nach seinem ersten Abschluss am Tokyo Art College, wo er zu den Schützlingen Yoshimura Junjos gehörte, wechselte Kim zum erfolgreichen Masterstudium an die Tokyo University. Im Jahr 1959, Kim war zu dieser Zeit Doktorand in Tokyo, gewann er mit einer Gruppe junger koreanischer Studenten den Wettbewerb für den Entwurf des koreanischen Parlaments. Zwar kam es, da die korrupte Regierung Rhee kurze Zeit später durch einen Volksaufstand gestürzt wurde, nicht zur Verwirklichung des Projekts, doch immerhin versetzte es Kim in den Stand, in seine Heimat zurückkehren zu können. Kim Swoo Geuns Karriere nahm einen steilen Anstieg, als er die Gunst des neuen Militärregimes Park Chung Hees erlangte. Im Zuge der Industrialisierungsbestrebungen des Landes fielen ihm erste wichtige Projekte zu, die er im skulpturalen Stil des Brutalismus ausführte. Zu den herausragenden Arbeiten dieser ersten Phase gehören die Hill Top Bar (1961), das Freedom Center and Tower Hotel (1963), das Buyeo Museum (1965) und das KIST Main Building (1967). Unter Kims Ägide als Präsident der koreanischen Engineering and Consulting Cooperation entstanden umfassende Planungen für die städtebauliche Neugestaltung der Insel Yoido, zur Sanierung des Zentrums von Seoul und für den Bau eines neuen internationalen Flughafens.

On 24 May 2007, the exhibition ‘Brick’ will open at the Groot Handelsgebouw in Rotterdam during the manifestation Rotterdam 2007, City of Architecture. The exhibition will highlight the results of the Brick project that was carried out over a three-year period at the European Ceramic Workcentre. The architecture project Brick was aimed at product innovation. The .ekwc wanted to stimulate the technical and artistic development of the manufacture and application of brick as a construction material. Architects, designers and artists from both the Netherlands and abroad have been working on the development of a new type of brick since 2005. The .ekwc expects to be able to use this to provide a new stimulus to the application of brick and subsequently the ‘brick appearance’ of the Netherlands. The underlying goal is that the centre wishes to demonstrate that input from various disciplines (architecture, art and design) can provide an additional impetus to the desired development.

Schabert initially alluded to a number of new functions for brick architecture, like a through moss growth cooled wall or the possibility of tubeless transport of heat. Eventually he applied himself to the development of a simple climate technological product; a brick that is capable of absorbing solar energy from the outside and consequently rendering it to the inner wall. Hereby the interior heating, which remains necessary, functions as a secondary ‘heating’ and a considerable saving of energy is gained. On the exact functioning Schabert does not wish to elaborate for the time being. A patent procedure is ongoing. Besides, the prototypes still have to be tested.
