116 cloud 8b

the truth is: it’s pretty cosy and warm inside them clouds. once inside, you will not miss anything from the outside world. they make you feel at home, they focus your thoughts. the comfort they provide is not only thermal, clouds break and soften the light in a smooth and wondeful way, they slightly pitch the accoustics, …

in contrast to what you might think: cloud-construction is far away from being rocket science. no need to be some god to build one of them. or more…

clouds are usually made from one 50m-roll of [post-consumer] sticky tape and 35m² of [fully recyclable] ldpe bubble wrap. they are soft, flexible. they glow in the dark and shine in the day…

everybody should have his/her own cloud!
even tough the unemployment rate in the external thermal insulation composite system [wdvs] industry will skyrocket – right through one of our comfy clouds!

inhalt & umfeld / content & context
the »freizeittreff 103er«, a recreational facility for youth in the perlacher street 103 in obergiesing, münchen, for its multi-purpose hall needs a stockroom for parking of equipment used for non-actual purposes. the stockroom was to be placed to its western side. the kreisjugendring münchen city operates the facility, a property of the city of münchen.

substance of the »103er« is square single-storey freestanding atrium-building of an edge length of 23,50 m with partial basement in skeleton construction from reinforced concrete (built in 1964) situated on a generous plot, hosting impressive walnut trees (juglans regia). the neighboring buildings consist essentially of multi-storey social housing.

entwurf / design

the utensils, equipment, furniture (goals, gym-mats, tables, stools, seating, lumenaires, …) to be housed, are the basis for the determination of the about 20 m² required floor area. the scalene bidirectional access allows with an almost halved depth of sorage space an extremely slim structure and thus an unobstructed open area.

the magazine (arab.: نزخملا , al-mahzan »treasury«) is not sticked onto the built stock but put aside of it, as a prototype witch site-specific adaptions. cost-generating and chemical-intensive issues coming along with joints, seams and settling turn dispensable as well as the undesired climbability of the atrium-building via this tread is avoided. in return, an unhampered thermodynamic upgrade of the stock is guaranteed, an easy, non-invasive assembly and disassembly  is assured.

 material & konstruktion / material & construction

four three-layered 60 mm thin boards, cross-laminated wood from a european spruce (picea abies) are gluelessly and reversibly clipped together off-site by two lateral bracings to a single-layer semi-monocoque. the just under 2.30 x 2.30 x 10.00 meters measuring magazine, with a weight of about 2.5 tons, rests on four prefabricated rc strip foots. it is connected with the former reversibly, translocate- and removeably. the face sides are closed translucently, each with 9 vertical profile-glass-elements. the solid construction liberates one with specific notches and rebatings from the use of construction-sub-systems, inter alia, window and door frames, doors and facade profiles. the (pre)fabrication of the magazine does not only avoid a construction vehicle caused compaction of the root zone, it also minimizes construction time as noise emission.

bauphysik / building physics
to avoid damage to construction and content from humidity aggegation, the magazine was given to be heated. instead, and in total denial of a storage spaces expectation of entitlement for heat energy, the principle for moisture balancing by continuous controlled cross-ventilation was implemented: the magazine became a conceptual (not a building- or insulation technological) zero-energy house, more than happy though to charge the passiv-solar gains harvested from its glazed southern façade to its 5 m³ of inert softwood. the magazine is under-, over- and crossventilated, it has no potentially damp-accumulating multilayered construction, the carcass layer is the lining layer, nothing is sealed, nothing becomes leaky.

strategischer holzschutz / strategic antifouling

the magazine is lifted off the ground and moved away from the existing concrete pedestal, thereby withdrawing from harmful splash water. the roof overhang tolerates occasional driving rain, the encompassing industrial glazing protects the sensitive trimmed edges of wall, floor and ceiling.

there are three elements that determine cohesion and assure pleasant distance:
(1) one of which cramps the wooden box, the »we« together, whilst connecting us casually to the ground. the
(2) second takes care in a 16-12-10-9-lineup, that the roof and the rain and the snow will not come too close. the
(3) third, in respectful distance shakes hand with its neighbor, it mirrors the rigidity of its foots concrete ledge onto our, vulnerable, organic floorplate, but not without charging the latter, in a highly comfortable manner, with the cantilever moment collected.

da muss man dann schon selber hand anlegen, bzw. alle gemeinsam.
[mehr hierzu unter 115 MAGiAZINg hände] not at all an isolated case: a totally great semi-finished product which is then drowned in a grisly construction subystem. you might want to get involved yourself, or all together.

This design-studio module is focussing on the (re-)development of a piece of urban tissue with the objective to create a predominantly residential though poly-functional sustainable urban module.
THE korean residential typology, the »apat« will be scrutinized for its qualities and performances. The research into its defects in catering for 21st century requirements, needs and desires will result into proposals for physical, energetical, sociological and demographical adaption, with a focus on spatial qualities: the apa²!

photo: naver map

The site of this project is yong-nam-woo-bang-town 1-cha, the home of 836 appartments.
[find out more at koreantypologies.net]

area 29.745 m²
built-up area/bebaute fläche 6.402 m²
coverage ratio/GRZ 21% / 0,21
gross floor area/BGF 94.924 m²
FAR (floor area ratio)/GFZ 250% / 2,5

How could the appartment-buildings [101, 102, 103, 105] as well as their surroundings, shops, underground-parking, outdoor-space, … be transformed into a prototypical urban module that is adapted (and could further adapt) to the demographic, social, energetic, spatial, transportational, economical, … changes in the requirement-profile? In order to act ecologically and economically responsible, you are expected to keep as much of the existing structures as possible/arguable and improve the ensemble by adding & substracting, restructuring and -programming, connecting and re-connecting.

Develop strategies, how to re-connect the residents of the appat to the land around them, the currently non-communicative and anonymous space between the buildings as well as between buildings and streets.

Develop integrative and symbiotic concepts for the appartment-blocks, …

… paying special attention to the ground-floor-zone and its use, …

… the entrance situation, the transition between the outside and the inside, …

… the currently completely neglected potential of the 5th facade of the building, …

… and with strong emphasis on the improvement of spatial qualities of the residential units.

You are expected to develop a range of integrative concepts, spanning from the scale of 1:10.000 down to 1:50.

intro a: billenium

… The cubicle was slightly More than four and a half square metres in floor area, half a square metre over the statutory maximum for a single person, the carpenters having taken advantage, illegally, of a recess beside a nearby chimney breast. Consequently Ward had been able to fit a small straight-backed chair into the interval between the bed and the door, so that only one person at a time needed to sit on the bed—in most single cubicles host and guest had to sit side by side on the bed, conversing over their shoulders and changing places periodically to avoid neck-strain…

a [20.05.2012]:

inside-out [externe erschliessung]

b [30.05.2012]:

küchenbox, küchenspange, offene küche

küchenbox

konzeptskizze, eingangs/obergeschoss, garten/untergeschoss

eingangs/obergeschoss, garten/untergeschoss

konzeptskizze, eingangs/obergeschoss, garten/untergeschoss

offene küche: perspektive vom standort eingang in richtung süden

c [24.06.2012]:

supermax

eingangs/obergeschoss, garten/untergeschoss

supermax minds the gap
[wasch]raumhaltige fassade statt polystyrolschaumstoffgebappe. reversibel, demontierbar, kreislauffähig.

109 korean typologies

an attempt to categorize our collection of south-korean architecture

after watching, observing, walking, driving, talking, spying, looking through and at south-korean cities, villages, landscapes [obeservational research], we felt some need to disclose our discoveries: starting from the three ubiquitous residential types han-ok, yang-ok and appat, we soon expanded our research to a wider range of anonymous vernacular, common architecture. we categorized the buildings according  to their scale.
we are looking for transferrable principles which could give the specific potentials of the typologies a cultural, social, economical and ecological architectural perspective.
this collection does not intend to be complete, the collection is intended as a process.

108 daegu tobacco studios

»Raw space for art!« that is what we suggest to the city council of daegu and the daegu fine arts association, who invited us to an international symposium, about the transformation of the 60.000 qm tabacco-factory »kt&g« into a cultural area. The massive building, near daegu station and near the historical city center, which is  a monumental witness of the korean industrial age and empty for several years, could be a corner-stone for the revitalisation of the whole area. > map

It could be a really symbiotic process, a »long-term interaction between different biological species« to start  using the building as factory for creative & cultural industries >from industrial production to cultural production. The building will survive, the artists will have space for their experimental art production and the neighbours will have vital partner, which effect on the urban space and the quality of the city.

allowing tobacco studios as well as its neighbourhood to develop in a symbiotic process to strengthen not only its identity as a space for art-production, but also the identity of colourful daegu.

coming to daegu 4 months ago, i was totally lost in this city. i had the impression, i will never be able to orientate in this city.  only the green hills seemed to me something  like an orientation mark., maybe one of the most characterizing points, that korean cities don’t seem to have no monumets, no palaces, churches, industrial complexes, …, no landmarks for orientation. we stubled onto this building in september, and for me it was the first building in daegu with real identity. a building like a monument, a massive landmark on the edge of the historical city of impressingly big scale, witness of  korean industrial age, of the enormous economic growing of this country. i can read in this building some part of koreas history, without knowing the language, without studying books.

107 living han-ok

Living Han-Ok in Daegu This project has the main focus on the vitalization of the Han-Ok, which are still existing in the center of the cities, for example in the traditional center of Daegu. The idea is, to develope the existing Han-Ok in the city-center to a convenient living-house for the next generation, by improving the climatic performance in a tectonic, and technological way. That means, preserving the character of the house, but adding new elements, which support the small building in a sensitive way. It´a more creative way and usable way of conversation, than the historical Han-Ok villages are able to offer. With the developing of the neglected Han-Ok the city center will become a more interesting place for living and housing again.

Adding two Elements New On-Dol in court-yard & Mobile glass-house system for winter/autem/spring, to make the courtyard a living room in winter.

Summer The new On-Dol in the courtyard will offer different functions; being a storage-tank for rainwater, which can be used for the flowers, toilet etc. being a thermal-mass for cooling house by radiation, or sitting on a “cool” floor.

Winter With the mobile glas-house system, you can close the courtyard in winter Sfor extending the living-room. The passive solar-win will heat the house and heat uo the thermal mass in the new On-Dol.

4.000 qm of leisure and sports facilities, of recreational and educational spaces spread out over four floors on a 3.000 qm plot, which should also keep its existing function of a park and ride (80 cars) for the nearby subwaystation.
